Internet Explorer
Maintenance
One of the things that contributes to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express slowing down or getting 'glitchy' is not doing "maintenance". Yes it takes time, but it's important. For normal computer users, once a month seems to be the norm for doing maintenance. If you install/uninstall a lot of programs, you should do it more often. Since I work graphics constantly, moving and deleting files, I do maintenance every other day. For OutlookExpress maintenance, click HERE

| I offer the tutorials
freely to you for learning purposes. I hope you find them
useful. As always, proceed at your own risk. Read through it
first to see if you understand it and always follow them word for word,
step by step. Do not rush or skip any steps. I am only responsible
for 'my' errors. *S*

otherwise, link to, remove, or claim as your own any files from these
pages. If you'd like to refer to any of the tutorials, please just

***IMPORTANT! Before starting the maintenance, disable screen savers and DO NOT run any other programs. In other words, don't do anything on the computer when maintenance is running. Have a cup of coffee, soda, play with the kiddies, pet the dog, whatever, just let the scans run. Step 1 of doing Maintenance
is cleaning up your hard drive of temp files and your recycle bin.
You can do this all at once by running Disk
Cleanup. |
2. All of the below files are safe to remove. If you see anything regarding 'uninstall files for windows'.....do not delete them. Check each of the below files and click OK. If you have more than one hard drive, go back to Disk Cleanup and run it for that HD also. |
3. [Win 98/98SE] Step 2 is running ScanDisk. Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ScanDisk. Choose the drive to Scan (1), click Standard (2) check 'automatically fix errors' (3) then click Start (4). The Standard Scan only takes a few minutes.......depending on the size of your hard drive. Every so often you should run a Thorough scan. I do it once a month and it takes about 3-4 hours to do both drives (total 40gb). Again, the time depends on the size of the hard drive(s). |
4. Step 3 is Defrag.
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk
Defragmentor. Both of these boxes will come up.
Select the drive you wish to defrag from the drop down menu. If
you have 2 hard drives, there is a choice to run both, one after the
other. Click OK. |
5. [Win 98/98SE] If you click on the Show Details button, it opens a large window and you can see what it is doing. It checks and moves your files back where they belong at the start, middle, or end of the drive. The time it takes to run will depend on the hard drive size and how long it's been since you ran it last. It could take anywhere from 5-45 minutes. Just let it run.......when it's finished a small box will be on your screen asking if you'd like to quit defrag........click yes and you're all cleaned up!!! |
